These birch panels look fantastic! The fact that you use it's pattern to be part of your painting is very interesting.

Thank you very much guys.

I squeezed a bit of burn umber on the panel and poured some dammar varnish on it and just rubbed in it with a cloth.
I usually make several of them in the same time, because it takes a day or two for them to dry out and the dammar varnish smells horrible :)

Basically any brown/reddish/ochre color will do, i would prefer transparent oxide red.
